Jewelry:
The style of jewelry used depends on the body part pierced. Jewelry can range from small to large hoops to barbell-type studs. A barbell is straight cylinder that is capped at both ends with a detachable ball. The jewelry used should accommodate the swelling that occurs after the piercing. Jewelry, like all the equipment used in a piercing, is autoclaved before it is placed through the hole.
Piercers recommend jewelry in hypoallergenic metals. This is to help prevent infections and allergic reactions. Two good choices are surgical steel and 14-karat gold. Other metals such as sterling silver should not be worn in fresh piercings. They can cause infection and slow healing.
